Providence University College in Otterburne, Manitoba installed a Triple Green Energy biomass furnace system as part of the Christian school’s move towards environmentalism. The TransCanada pipeline compressor west of Hwy 59 failed in January 2014, sending flames 200 feet in the air and melting a portion of Provincial Road 303 leading to Providence University College. Approximately 4,000 Manitoba residents throughout southeast Manitoba were without heat for two weeks, as crews scrambled to restore gas service. Providence was unaffected although temperatures dipped to -34° C outdoors. The school’s biomass furnace system, fuelled by wood pellets from nearby Hutterite colonies kept the building, staff and students able to remain in operation.
